Borderland, Open Space and Wind – Experience Nolde’s Homeland

Seebüll lies only a few kilometres from the North Sea – embedded in the quiet expanse of the North Frisian marsh landscape, directly on the German‑Danish border. Here, between ditches, meadows and the wide horizon, Emil Nolde found his artistic home. The landscape, with its special light, its intense stillness and the interplay of colours, shaped his work and became, over decades, both motif and source of inspiration. In harmony with the art in the Nolde House and the garden, the landscape around Seebüll forms a unique total work of art.

Paths through the landscape

The surroundings around Seebüll remain to this day a quiet retreat – original, unspoiled and rich in natural experiences. Here you can observe rare wading and meadow birds, discover salt‑tolerant plants along the ditches, and feel the North Sea wind on old dikes. Whether for strolling, lingering or marvelling – an excursion into the landscape around Seebüll is worthwhile at any time of year.

On foot or by bike through Nolde´s world

Various paths lead through the impressive surroundings around the museum – ideal for immersing yourself in Nolde’s world and experiencing the North Frisian landscape up close. Depending on the weather, we recommend sturdy footwear and ask you to be mindful of natural unevenness along the paths.

Path to the Nolde boat:

From the bus car park, a quiet walking path leads through the wide marsh to a reconstruction of Emil Nolde’s historic fishing boat. The artist used the boat as a means of transport on the surrounding canals and for fishing or withdrawing onto the water. The path ends at the bridge over the Schmale on Revtoftweg. From there, the route returns along the same path – a short walk in the midst of Nolde’s familiar landscape.

To the Hülltofter Tief:

A lovely walk leads in approx. 15 minutes to the Hülltofter Tief – a lake idyllically situated with a public bathing area. The path runs through open fields and past the historic fire brigade boat “Christine” of the municipality of Neukirchen. Upon reaching the lake, seating areas, a fire pit and a small toilet building invite you to linger, picnic or simply pause – a quiet place in the middle of the North Frisian landscape.

The Nolde Path – from Seebüll to Rudbøl (DK):

This scenically appealing path begins behind the Visitor Forum. In about an hour it leads through the marsh to Rosenkranz and further across the border into Danish Rudbøl. Rosenkranz attracts with its small village church and Frisian charm, Rudbøl with a view of the old border house, a lakeside path and small places to stop – ideal for a cross‑border discovery tour. The Nolde Path is also well suited for cycling – perfect for anyone who prefers to enjoy the expanse of the landscape on two wheels.
