Catalogue Raisonné

The Seebüll Ada and Emil Nolde Foundation is expanding its research on Emil Nolde’s watercolours and drawings with the aim of producing a scholarly catalogue raisonné. This will serve in future as a reference for the authenticity and classification of works on paper and further deepen the art‑historical documentation of the oeuvre.

Catalogue Raisonné of the Watercolours and Drawings

Owners may submit artworks for assessment. The examination is carried out by the Foundation’s Academic Advisory Board and an external conservator. Submitted documents, the Foundation’s archive and scholarly methods are used to research provenance. The assessment takes place twice a year in Seebüll; the fee is 500 euros.

Submitters of artworks receive, in the event of a positive assessment, confirmation from the Foundation that their work is registered with the Seebüll Ada and Emil Nolde Foundation and will be included in a future catalogue raisonné of Emil Nolde’s watercolours and drawings.

Results are recorded in the Foundation’s database and may be incorporated into the future catalogue raisonné. Inclusion follows scholarly review but does not constitute a claim to recognition. Artworks with an expertise confirmed up to 2016 are automatically considered; works with expert opinions from 2017 onward only after renewed examination.

Process

Owners of watercolours and drawings who believe their works should be included in a future catalogue raisonné and registered in the database of the Nolde Foundation Seebüll are asked to send their request by email to werkverzeichnis@nolde-stiftung.de – with as much information as possible about the work and its provenance, as well as an image of the front and, if possible, the reverse (high resolution is not required).
